New details in Hayden Panettiere death

Hayden Panettiere’s Sudden Death: New Details Emerge About Her Final Moments and Turbulent Relationship

We’re learning new details about the sudden death of Hayden Panettiere as her mother speaks out about her passing and the actress’s turbulent relationship with her on-again, off-again boyfriend. Here’s what we now know about the circumstances surrounding the 36-year-old star’s unexpected cardiac arrest and the ongoing investigation.

The Final Moments: What the Police Report Reveals

According to investigators, Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach, were also at the South Carolina apartment complex when Panettiere suffered cardiac arrest. Police say the brothers called 911, with the dispatcher noting, “Having cardiac arrest, CPR is in progress.” EMS attempted to perform life-saving measures for an extended period before they called the time of death.

The police report noted that Zach was very emotional while EMS was working on Hayden, but Brian did not become emotional until EMS declared her officially deceased. Afterward, investigators say Brian showed officers the bag of medication Hayden was currently taking.

A Turbulent Relationship: Abuse, Addiction, and a Mother’s Warnings

Panettiere and Hickerson’s relationship was often tumultuous and many times violent, especially as it impacted her addiction issues with alcohol. She spoke about this openly on the Tamron Hall Show earlier this year while promoting her memoir. “This is during the peak of abuse, and that’s how I was processing it and handling the anxiety. And addicts want a quick fix,” she said. “You were in a relationship with a person [with] a number of public incidents, arrests, and painful moments, and you were self-medicating through this pain. It wasn’t just physical — it was the manipulative, psychological abuse that she was enduring. And he seemed very charming at first, which made it very easy to pull the wool over someone’s eyes.”

Her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, chronicled the alleged abuse in her relationship with Hickerson, including the time when he was charged with multiple counts of felony abuse. “Brian pleaded no contest, but I knew that with what I was telling the police, he was sure to be found guilty. It ate at me, but I had to do what was right in the eyes of the law. Tell that to my heart, though. Despite all he’d done to me, I still loved Brian for who I believed he was.” Hickerson served a total of 45 days in jail after pleading no contest to two of those charges. He recently told TMZ he had regrets, but they were still friends. “I went into such a dark place, man. Drugs, alcohol, abuse — good God almighty.”

Just three days before Panettiere’s death, a judge denied Hickerson’s request to have those felony domestic abuse charges reduced to misdemeanors and to expunge his convictions. Panettiere’s mother, Leslie Vogel, has now taken direct aim at Hickerson. “This person in her life that we have been trying to get rid of for quite some time was with her at her death. And that was Brian Hickerson.” Vogel called her daughter “an amazingly talented person” but added, “I think young people who grow up in the entertainment industry, it is a struggle. I don’t do things halfway.”

The Investigation Continues: Cause of Death Pending, DEA Joins

Police say they found no indications of foul play or suspicious circumstances, and the preliminary autopsy found no signs of trauma. Panettiere’s exact cause of death is still pending. The DEA is now joining the investigation, though the reasons for their involvement have not been fully disclosed.

Hayden’s Hope for the Future

Despite her struggles, Panettiere had hoped to conquer them and return to her career. “I would love to get back in front of the camera, behind the camera. I try my hand at writing. I’ve got a whole laundry list of to-dos,” she said in her final interviews.

Her death leaves behind a complex legacy — a talented actress who faced very public battles with addiction, abuse, and mental health, but who never stopped hoping for a brighter chapter. As her mother put it, “This is the first time where I’m walking out myself. I’m not promoting a project or a character that I play. This is the raw version of me.” The raw version of Hayden Panettiere was a person fighting to heal, and the full story of her final hours is still being written by investigators.
